Following an introduction by Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy fame, Morrissey played a sold-out show to almost 20,000 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Friday night. According to the The Hollywood Reporter, the British rocker ran through a collection of his best-known songs and paused briefly to take a swipe at Beyonce.

Morrissey claimed that the diva’s choice of handbags has helped lead to the extinction of the rhinoceros, then launched into his pro-vegetarian anthem “Meat Is Murder.”

No stranger to controversy, Morrissey had spent the week leading up to the concert targeting other celebrities. He cancelled an appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live because the stars of the reality show Duck Dynasty, the Robertson family, had been booked for the same night.

Morrissey opened his gig with a song from his days with The Smiths, "Shoplifters of the World Unite," updating a line about "a future war…on Channel Four" to include a mention of Syria. The rest of the set featured a mixture of solo material and Smiths classics, plus a cover of Frankie Valli's 1969 hit "To Give (The Reason I Love)," which Morrissey introduced as "an Italian song."
